Fr. Kuriacose SJ : Messages from Past Presidents

Messages of appreciation on Rev. Fr. Kuriacose SJ from Past Presidents of CMRS

  • Rev. Fr. Vimal Tirimanna, CSsR
  • President CMRS 1999 - 2003

It was with a heavy heart that I heard the sad news of the passing away of dear Fr.Kuri. His contribution to the CMRS as its President and later as its Executive Secretary cannot be forgotten. It was during my two mandates as President of the CMRS (1999-2003) that at our request the Jesuits released him to be a full-time Secretary of the CMRS. His zeal and enthusiasm with regard to what a force of consecrated men and women in Sri Lanka could be (if they pulled themselves together in solidarity) did propel all of us to dream great dreams during those happy years of the CMRS. It was a time when we were able to resuscitate the CMRS thanks mainly to the special inspiration of Fr. Kuri. He was always very supportive of our efforts in the CMRS for national reconciliation at a time when LTTE terrorism was creating havoc and the counter terrorist war efforts of the government also adding to the misery of the ordinary citizens in the North and the East. Yet, we in the CMRS managed to do what we could and the role played by dear Fr. Kuri was tremendous. Even in other important areas like establishing a permanent secretariat for the CMRS (of which he became the first full-time secretary), formulating a Vision-Mission Statement, the brining out of a full catalogue of Religious in Sri Lanka, the re-opening of the Sister Formation program at Aquinas after long years, a visit to the north in those turbulent years and having one CMRS quarterly meeting in Jaffna,…..etc. are some such achievements of the CMRS during those years in which  we had when Fr. Kuri was serving as its Executive Secretary.

Not only the CMRS, but our Sri Lankan Church as a whole has many things for which we could be grateful for the gift of Fr. Kuri. He was a man of deep faith and conviction and it was these qualities which enabled him to be very forthright, at times even challenging openly the members of the hierarchy whenever the CMRS had common meetings with the CBCSL.

That is why we give thanks to God for the rich gift of Fr.  Kuri. I for one had direct personal experience of his enthusiasm for the betterment of the Church. We will miss him, but we know that he is already in the bosom of the heavenly Father waiting to welcome us one day!

    May he rest in peace!

  • Rev. Fr. Oswald Firth OMI
  • President CMRS 2003 - 2004

Fr. Thomas Kuriacose, SJ has always been a visionary whose ideas went beyond the box.  A very courageous man and a true missionary in his own country.

He always had, not just the Church, but God’s Kingdom at heart. The Church is further impoverished when we lose people of his caliber.

One cannot forget his contribution to the Religious Congregations even when he was no more president of the CMRS.

He is one of those people I would consider to be a universal figure not limited to being a member of his own congregation.

Here was a man who challenged evil and hypocrisy whenever he encountered these aberrations.

Unfortunately, we have lost a brave man who knew how to call a spade a spade, it hardly mattered whether he was dealing with an archbishop or with a president of the country.

Authority feared him and yet respected him.

May he rest in peace.  I shall remember him during the celebration of the Eucharist.
