CMRS Mid-year Live-in Sessions

The mid-year live-in sessions of the Conference of the Major Religious Superiors of Sri Lanka were held in Serene Pastures Spirituality Center, Bolawalana from the 19th to the 21st of June.

In addition to treating regular matters pertaining to CMRS (matters arising from the minutes, financial report and the reports of the commissions on formation, education, JPIC, and RRU), there were three input sessions that were very useful. These were on the themes of 1) Protection of minors and vulnerable adults, 2) New taxation policies in Sri Lanka, and 3) Catholic Care for Children. There were also reflections about starting a spirituality center for religious, supporting the plantation community that celebrates the 200th year of the arrival in Sri Lanka from South India, and the revamping of the CMRS website.

In the evening of the first day, the major superiors paid in the provincial house of the Oblates in Mattakuliya their last respects to the mortal remains of the late Rev. Fr. Oswald Firth OMI. Fr. Firth had been the president of CMRS in the early 2000s.

On the last day of the sessions, the major superiors said goodbye to the country superior of the Capuchin Tertiary Sisters of the Holy Family Rev. Sr. Luz Maria Buitrago who has been transferred to a community in the Philippines. She had been an active member of the CMRS.

During the days of the meeting, reflections and plans were made regarding strengthening the Regional Religious Units (RRU) in different dioceses, addressing issues faced by the religious in the education sector, consolidating JPIC-related activities, and increasing the participation of religious men and women in the programs organized by the CMRS.

Fr. Roshan Silva OMI, President of CMRS presided the sessions on the first 2 days, and on the last day in his absence due to the funeral of Fr. Firth, Sr. Robina Paulin HC, the Vice President presided.

The mid-year live-in was a time of blessing and communion-building among the major superiors. As a collective leadership body of religious in Sri Lanka, it was reiterated that the CMRS has a special role to play in matters related to the Church and the country.

The next meeting of the Conference of the Major Religious Superiors is to take place in the month of October in Eymard Campell Retreat House, Hanwella.
